Freebie Giveaway prints!

WELL- our last freebie portrait print set wrapped up with the most recent Tube Sale, and so we’re moving on to SOMETHING NEW! Something who? Oh- SOMETHING WHO.

These two prints are the first in what we hope will be an 11 (or is it 12? SPOILERS.) set of portraits that we’re giving away for free with orders!

Each 2-color hand-printed image measures 9×24, and is signed and numbered by Doyle in editions of 150 each. There will also be a Silver Metallic Variant edition of only 20 of each, which will also be randomly inserted in orders. You MUST order a poster on the site to get one- we can’t put these in bags w/ shirts, or envelopes with stickers!

The next 300 orders on the site will get ONE of these prints- we’ll tweet and update this page when they’re gone.

BERNIE WRIGHTSON PRINT SUBSCRIPTIONS!

Nakatomi is proud to continue our relationship with Illustrator-supreme, Bernie Wrightson, and his Frankenstein Print Series! After selling out of the first two releases, we solicited feed-back from our customers and as a result, we’re happy to present the WRIGHTSON FRANKENSTEIN PRINT SUBSCRIPTION!

On Tuesday, 5/14 between Noon and 2PM Central Time, we’ll offer up 175 subscriptions to the next 5 screen-printed art-prints in the series for $230 plus shipping. The Subscriptions will be available for 24 hours, or when 175 are sold, whichever comes first.

The subs will include exclusives that will only be available to those purchasing the set, never for sale on the site! -

“Perished on the Scaffold“- 20×30 print- max edition of 175. (Limited to the number of Subs sold)
6″ Exclusive sticker of the Monster
9×12 print of the title page to Wrightson’s Illustrated Edition of Frankenstein- also max edition of 175.

The subscriptions will ship out in 3 tubes- 2 prints per tube. The first tube will ship out with the exclusives and the next print in the series- “Rest but in Death”- pictured below-

Two months later in July, you will receive the next 2, and again two months after that in September. Each print will be in signed and hand-numbered editions!

One of the prints in the subscription will be a beautiful image of the Monster that was cut from the original book, and rarely seen since it was drawn by Wrightson- over 30 years ago. All the art files are in hand, and ready to print- there will be no delays in fulfillment!

Poster Per Diem: Tim Doyle’s Dr. Who and the Daleks Movie Poster

I’ve long-known about the 1992 Dr. Who made-for-television movie, but I had no idea there was a 1965 feature-length theatrical film. How did I discover this bit of priceless information, you ask? (Alright, alright, “priceless” is clearly going too far.) Why, Tim Doyle’s wonderful poster, of course. Doyle’s lovely design rightly deifies our Dalek overlords, bathing them in the buzzing light of stardom, while slyly introducing a mysterious Peter Cushing as the titular Dr. Who. It’s an awesome little print that, understandably, sold out online in no time at all.

Doctor Who and the Daleks!

Tim Doyle’s Doctor Who print for the Studio Canal Doctor Who movie from the 60′s is now an official DVD/ Blu-Ray cover! How crazy is that?!?

These should be available shortly- no word on if there’s an all-region release, or if it’s UK only, but we’ll keep you posted!

Here’s a special behind the scenes look into how this print / image was made!

When I first got the gig, I was a fan of the Doctor, but hadn’t seen this film in about 20 years or so- luckily, the older non-restored version was still available on Amazon, so I gave it a spin! My good friend, and Doctor Who expert, Paul Hanley had a model of the particular Daleks as seen in this movie, so he was able to lend it to me so I could shoot my own reference! Next I made a collage of how I wanted everything arranged, so I could send it to the client and make sure they were happy with the direction I had chosen-

The Daleks were shot from the model, and the rest of the elements were from either screen-grabs from the DVD, or google-image search. This was approved, but I still needed a solid reference for Peter Cushing as the doctor, standing tall (ish) as I couldn’t find one in the film that fit the bill. I wanted to make sure I got his build right- even as an outline, I needed to make sure it still ‘read’ as Cushing. Off to Google again!

Strangely, the best image I could find was a drawing by Paul Hanley- my friend who loaned me the Dalek model to begin with! Crazy. Paul’s a killer artist who’s done a ton of Who work- You should totally check out his Deviant Art page HERE. Not only is Paul responsible for my new-found Who obsession, but he was a big help with this print!

So, from that collage, I created this hand-drawn line-art image-

Which was then scanned in and colored and separated in Photoshop for printing, and then printed in my shop- so we arrive at THIS-

Pretty neat, huh?

These are a lot of fun to do, actually. Just a blast to sit down and doodle Wolverine or whoever. Reminds me of being a kid again.

I nearly lost my mind when I first saw this piece of art from Tim Doyle’s UnReal Estate II. I stayed late at work one night refreshing - just hoping that I would be able to get a chance to own such an awesome piece of Doctor Who pop culture. Now it’s hanging up next to me as I type this, a welcome addition to my collection!

Here’s what Tim says about Doctor Who from his interview on Nakatomi Inc.:

I fought Doctor Who. I fought hard. And I lost.

I grew up in suburban Dallas, and the PBS station there back in the 80′s had a glorious programming schedule of Fawlty Towers, Are You Being Served?, Black Adder, Monty Python, Blake’s 7 and Doctor Who. And I ate it all up with gusto. I loved that stuff, and I’m pretty sure it made me the total cultural weirdo that you now see before you. I bathed in the Doctors Baker- Tom and Colin, with some Peter Davidson and Celery thrown into the middle for good measure. So when the show was relaunched, I was intrigued- but not enough to seek it out. Sure, my friends pushed and pleaded with me to watch it, but I resisted.
Enter Netflix.

When I finally decided to give it a go, I was sucked in- hard. It’s now a terminal condition.

For the theme of Unreal Estate- the whole point is to depict locations that we’re all familiar with- a recurring element that is a touchstone for a series. For Doctor Who- a show that changes location (time AND space) on an almost weekly basis- the only constant is the TARDIS itself. The funny, flying Blue Police Box that has been the Doctor’s constant companion for 50 years now. While there are shows with vehicles that appear regularly (the A-Team van, KITT, Airworf- to name a few) the TARDIS is more than a vehicle- it’s a home and character of it’s own right. It is as much a slice of real estate as familiar as the Brady Home or the Starship Enterprise. But unlike the Enterprise, it travels through space with a funny accent.

It’s Nakatomi mystery tube sale time, folks! Or more precisely: it’ll be Nakatomi mystery tube sale time at some point between 12 and 2 PM Central later this afternoon. If you’ve never purchased a tube o’ secrets from Tim Doyle and company, believe me, you’ll definitely be getting your money’s worth. The last time I battled my way through the throngs of consumer combatants in order to successfully purchase one of the much sought after art grab bags, I received four very cool posters, all fit for immediate framing, and one incredible Jackie Brown inspired screen print on wood. I was understandably surprised and excited by my discovery. In the immortal words of Forrest Gump’s mother, then later articulated to a complete stranger: “He should not be hitting you, Jenny.” I mean: “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” That’s the one.
