“Gojira Vs. The Smoke Monster” PROCESS!
This print is ON SALE NOW HERE!
While you’re here…we wanted to show off some of the behind-the-scenes process pictures for this great new print!
“Gojira Vs. The Smoke Monster” is an 18×24 4 color hand-printed silkscreen poster- signed and numbered by the artist in a first edition of only 150 worldwide.
1-Like almost all of Doyle’s prints, it starts with a hand-drawn line-art image, done in pencil, brush and ink, and felt-tip pen. This print was drawn on a sheet of 12×16 Strathmore brand Bristol board- it’s a really great surface to work on, and it can stand up to a lot of abuse from wet media, as you’re about to see. Once the line-art is completed, it is scanned in at 600 dpi, and then…
2-Doyle hand-tones the original art board with watercolor and gouache paint, applied with a Windsor Newton Series 7 Sable brush, size 4. Blocking in the grey tones and values this way gives the final product a more organic appearance than you would normally get from the flat-color aesthetic of screenprinting. That hand-painted image is now scanned in and lined up with the original line-art, and then bitmapped into tiny little dots, which then makes it suitable for screenprinting. Then, Doyle digitally lays in the colors in Photoshop and sends the layers off for burning onto screens!
3-Here you see the first 3 layers of the print down on the actual paper. The ink is still wet! First color down was the warm grey, then the red, and then transparent black ink! As you can see in the face and hands, the watercolor detailing on the skin is pushed back to the transparent black layer to soften it up a bit, and make it look a little bit softer. The rest of the detail is on the black ink layer, as you can see below!
Here’s the finished print, before it gets trimmed down to 18×24. (We print on 20×26 sheets to give us a handling edge and room for registration marks.) You can see at the top of the sheet the color notes and print instructions to the printers!

“A Torrent of Light Into Our Dark World” by Bernie Wrightson
This is a special one, folks.
This stunningly beautiful image was created over 30 years ago, but never actually included in the final publication of Bernie Wrightson’s illustrated version of Marry Shelley’s Frankenstein.
Only printed once in the rarely seen and long out-of-print “The Lost Frankenstein” paperback from 20 years ago, this masterpiece is relatively obscure (undeservedly so) compared to the rest of this body of work.
The final print measures 20×30 and is signed and numbered in an edition of only 160. There are no AP copies of this print in existence. 110 of these prints are already shipped out to subscribers of the Frankenstein Series, leaving us only 50 copies to sell to the general public.
At the time of this writing Subscriptions are still available HERE. If this print sells out upon release, Full Subscriptions will no longer be available.
“A Torrent of Light Into Our Dark World” will be available on the Nakatomi site at 2PM Central Time in the store pages HERE.
On a personal note, we’re completely impressed with how amazing Bernie has been to work with on this project- the man is a living legend, and yet he’s always accessible and kind- a true gentleman in every regard.
Also- his studio has a bunch of skulls in it, and that’s pretty rad and a little scary. Bonus!
“Features As Beautiful” Frankenstein art print by Bernie Wrightson- onsale WEDNESDAY 6/12

NOTE- If you purchased a subscription last month- this print will ship in July, along with next month’s release.
If you would still like to purchase a subscription, we do have a TINY amount left (like 5) that were set aside in case of lost or damaged orders- now that orders have been landing safely, we’re opening them back up for sale. If interested, please let us know through the Contact Form.

Thank you all from Nakatomi and Bernie Wrightson!
“When I was originally asked by the company managing the band’s VIP merch, I literally had never heard a song by MUSE. I am old and mostly smell funny, and don’t listen to anything that can’t be played on an accordion. BUT- after checking out a couple of MUSE’s music videos on the YouTubeBox, I was impressed by the large-scale epic Sci-Fi feel a couple of them had, and the rusty gears in my brain started turning. I’ve been on a bit of a Moebius kick recently (like, since about 1982 when I first saw TRON) and so I wanted to pay tribute to that great master while also mixing in some Jack Kirby and Sorayama for good measure. Like 99% of my prints, they’re drawn by my aged, shaky hands and then scanned into my computer, where elves do the rest of the work.”
You can pick them up HERE in the TIM DOYLE section of the Nakatomi store!
